Inside Yosemite Valley’s Historic Ahwahnee Hotel

Step inside a National Historic Landmark with soaring ceilings and views

With its soaring ceilings, massive stone hearths, and windows framing Yosemite’s granite cathedrals, The Ahwahnee exudes a quiet grandeur that has drawn travelers for nearly a century.

Where Is The Ahwahnee?

The Ahwahnee sits in the heart of Yosemite Valley, within Yosemite National Park in the Sierra Nevada, surrounded by some of the park's most iconic landmarks, including Half Dome, Yosemite Falls, and Glacier Point.

It's roughly 200 miles east of San Francisco and about 300 miles north of Los Angeles, typically reached via Highway 41 from Fresno and Oakhurst to the south, or Highway 140 from Merced through El Portal to the west—both of which remain open year-round, unlike the seasonal Tioga Pass (Highway 120) entrance from the east.

Once inside the park, the hotel sits along the Valley's main shuttle route, making it an easy, car-free base for exploring the rest of Yosemite Valley.

When Was The Ahwahnee Built?

The Ahwahnee was built between 1926 and 1927 and opened to guests in July 1927. Architect Gilbert Stanley Underwood designed it with steel, granite, and concrete stained to look like redwood, blending with the surrounding cliffs and resisting fire.

Every one of the 123 rooms, suites, and cottages is unique. But perhaps the hotel is most famous for its dining room featuring a 34-foot, elaborately painted ceiling and dramatic wrought-iron chandeliers.

What Famous People Have Stayed at The Ahwahnee?

Many notable people have slept at this National Historic Landmark in Yosemite Valley, including John F. Kennedy, Greta Garbo, Queen Elizabeth II, and Winston Churchill. But you don’t have to be a celebrity, statesman, or royalty to experience it.

What Makes The Ahwahnee Special?

The Ahwahnee’s history, interiors, architecture, and proximity to Yosemite make it an exceptional, well-known institution. Everything is built on a grand scale, from the massive hand-stenciled timber beams to sandstone fireplaces so large you could hold a tea party inside.

Colorful stained-glass windows, Native American tapestries and baskets, Turkish kilim rugs, and Yosemite-inspired 19th-century paintings depicting the park’s waterfalls and giant sequoia trees adorn the lodge.

You don’t have to be a guest to experience the hotel; you can wander inside to take in the splendor at no charge. The Ahwahnee Yosemite offers free, one-hour guided tours year-round; check with the hotel's concierge desk for the current schedule.

You can also still book a table for the sumptuous Sunday brunch at The Ahwahnee Dining Room (more on that below). Or attend the festive Bracebridge Dinners which has been running during the winter holiday season since the hotel’s opening.

The Ahwahnee and The Shining

Contrary to a persistent myth, the 1980 film adaptation of The Shining was not filmed at The Ahwahnee—the hotel's grand lobby and crimson elevator doors did, however, directly inspire the design of the fictional Overlook Hotel's interior sets, built at a studio in England.
