Getting decked out for the holidays has become a full-on extravaganza at San Diego’s world-class zoo, in Balboa Park, just north of downtown San Diego. During the annual Jungle Bells celebration, running December 18, 2026, through January 3, 2027 (except December 24), the zoo stays open until 8 p.m., so you can get into the spirit in ways only the San Diego Zoo can inspire. Best of all, Jungle Bells is included with regular zoo admission or membership.
What to Expect at Jungle Bells
Arrive in the late afternoon to visit the animals before dark, then stay to see the zoo glow. From about 5 to 8 p.m., immersive light displays transform the grounds, including the colorful Painted Jungle and Rainbow Forest light trails and a dazzling laser trail. Along the way, enjoy live entertainment such as a holiday brass ensemble, Santa’s acrobatic elves, Jack Frost Juggler, and seasonal treats, plus photos with Santa on select days leading up to Christmas.
Ready for a photo op? Meet Dr. Harry Lion, Churchill Polar Bear, and Sydney Koala (Santa's favorite helpers) and all their friends as you stroll the grounds. They'll be dressed in their holiday finest, ready to strike a pose with you. Or, sing along with the wandering Holiday Troubadour, who will be strumming a guitar and singing festive standards.
The Holiday Light Celebration beckons you to tour the grounds after dark via an interactive lighted pathway; you'll see elaborate displays such as the Northern Frontiers Holiday Forest, with specially designed lighting adorning trees, and displays of winter-loving animals. Also enjoy carolers, musicians, storytellers, elves flipping around in their trampoline Toy Hop Shop, and—of course—a huge decorated tree.
No holiday celebration is complete without a reading of the poem The Night Before Christmas, and here, it’s animal-themed, hosted by Dr. Zoolittle.
Holiday Events in Balboa Park
Outside the zoo, Balboa Park gets dolled up during the holidays too. Visit during the annual December Nights event for special music and dance performances, seasonal activities and crafts, carnival rides, holiday foods from around the world at the International Cottages, and spectacular displays in the historic Botanical Building.
